Naked Before God

He [Adam] answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”  (Genesis 3:10)

Have you ever hidden from God?  Like Adam, you know He’s there.  You hear Him calling your name, but you hide.  You know that it is in vain, still you hide.  You are fully aware that the God of the Universe knows all things, yet you hide.

Why? Could it be that like Adam and Eve, your sin stands naked before God? Is it fear or guilt or shame that makes you hide?

Sin separates us from God.  We know the consequence before we ever sin, nevertheless we sin.  Adam knew firsthand the closeness of walking with God. They spent much time together strolling through the garden. You may have experienced a time in your life where you felt so close to God that you literally sensed Him standing right beside you. Then, suddenly, sin stepped in, broke that relationship, and you went into hiding.

Adam was hiding and God knew where he was hiding.  He knew why Adam was hiding.  Still He called to the man, “Where are you?”  So, if God knew where he was, why did He ask this question? Could it be that he wanted Adam to answer? Isn’t this exactly what He does for us? When we drift away, He calls to us, “Where are you?” Not because He doesn’t know exactly where we are, but because He wants us to recognize our hidden sins and return to Him. Jesus said in Mark 4:22 , “For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.” In Hebrews 4:13, the writer tells us, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.  Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

Isn’t it reassuring to know that our Heavenly Father does not leave us in hiding? He unrelentingly pursues us.  “Betty, where are you?”  Can you hear Him calling?  “Steve, where are you?” (Insert your name) “______________, where are you?” He calls and calls.  He knows where you are, but He calls anyway.

God called unto Adam.  The Hebrew word for called can also be interpreted as invites. When God calls to you, He is inviting you to return to fellowship with Him.  The Lord God bids you to come.  Why? Because His intention is to commune with you. It’s His desire to have intimate fellowship with you.

Adam heard Him calling.  I suppose He could have ignored the call, as we so often do, but he didn’t. Adam answered, “I was naked, so I hid.” He admitted his need to be covered and knew that God would meet that need.  God did. With His own hands he fashioned clothes to cover Adam and Eve. You and I have the same need.  Our sin lies naked before a Holy God.  We can hide or we can cry out, “God, here I am. I have sinned, so I hid.”  When we do, we can be sure that Jesus will answer, “Oh my child, come. Let me cover your sin with my blood.”
