Choose to Rejoice

Debra Shirley

Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.  (Habakkuk 3:18-19)

Pain! It took up residence in my life two years ago. The doctors call it Fibromyalgia; I call it turmoil. Every morning, I struggle to emerge from bed. My energy level registers a negative ten. I am weary.  However, there is a daily choice I must make.  I can remain in bed and sulk or I can drag myself from bed, shuffle to my quiet place, and meet with God.

Frequently, deer adorn my front-porch sanctuary.  When my poodle chases them, they leap over nature’s obstacle course of downed trees, large rocks, and wide gullies with little effort. I find myself envious of them.

The NIV Life Application Study Bible contains a footnote for Habakkuk 3.  It says, “Habakkuk’s feelings were not controlled by the events around him but by faith in God’s ability to give him strength. When nothing makes sense, and when troubles seem more than you can bear, remember that God gives strength.  Take your eyes off your difficulties and look to God.”

With determination, I cast my eyes on God.  Though there are hurdles of pain, depression, and grief, I will rejoice in the Lord and ask Him to make my feet strong enough to endure this journey and steady enough to allow me to go to His high place.

Are you struggling with an issue that has zapped you physically or emotionally? Are there days when you are tempted to give up and give in to the hopelessness of the situation?  Your response is a daily choice.  Choose today to rejoice in the LORD.  Allow the Sovereign LORD to be your strength.
