In the beginning was the Word …

What does it mean that Jesus Christ is The Word?

John tells us that He was with God from the beginning. He was there when God first spoke the words, “Let there be light.” Not only was He with God, He was co-creator. John tells us that He created all things and without Him nothing would have been made.

Throughout the Bible we learn of the importance of not just understanding that Jesus is the Word, but knowing Him as The Word. As we come to know Him more and more each day, we allow Him to infuse our hearts with His Word and to direct our steps along His pathway.

Praise Him this week as The Word. Open His Word and seek to know Him more.

Jesus, I praise You this week as The Word who is, who was, and who always will be. You are the great “I AM” and The Word who became flesh and came to earth to live among us. Speak to my heart this week as The Word of life and light. AMEN! SO BE IT!

OUR CONFIDENCE

Where does my confidence lie?

If it is in a political party, I will be disappointed.

If it is in our government, I will be disappointed.

If it is in this world, I will be disappointed.

If it is in any human being, I will be disappointed.

My confidence must be in GOD alone.

No one else and nothing else will do.

As I write this, I’m watching the devastating events of Afghanistan, and my heart is broken for them. There are already reports of Christian home pastors being murdered and girls being taken from their homes. The Afghan people are desperate to escape their country to the point of hanging onto US planes attempting to take off. Thousands are running for their lives. These people feel hopeless, abandoned and alone. God alone can save them.

As we praise the Lord this week as Our Confidence, let’s commit to pray that the underground Christian churches will thrive even in the midst of this turmoil. Let’s seek to put our confidence in our Sovereign Lord for He alone is where our hope lies.

HOLY SPIRIT

Paul wrote to the church of Ephesus, “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14)

Isn’t that incredible news? If you have received Jesus as your Savior, you are marked and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

A JUST GOD

What does it mean that God is a Just God?

I don’t know about you, but there are days when this attribute of God causes me some consternation. If God is truly JUST, don’t I deserve punishment and death? On any given day when I fail Him, I often wonder why He doesn’t struck me with lightening and  take me out of this world.

Why doesn’t He? Because along with His Justice, He offers mercy and grace to His children. Praise God for the promise of 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and JUST and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Isaiah wrote “Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” (Isaiah 30:18)

Isn’t that good news?

Yes, God is Just, but He is also gracious and full of mercy.

Robert Hampshire in an article at Christianity.com defines JUST this way …

“… for God to be just means that he is consistent, virtuous, innocent, and right. And since his justness is part of his immutable nature (meaning it cannot change), then he is always right and just in whatever he does.”

“In fact, the very justness of God (and his law) illuminates his love, grace, and mercy in a way that nothing else could because not only is God just, but he is our justifier — meaning he alone has the power and ability to make us righteous before him.”

LAMB OF GOD

Perhaps one of the most disturbing stories in the Old Testament would be the one of Abraham and Isaac found in Genesis 22. God told Abraham to take his son, his only son Isaac, and offer him as a burnt offering.

During their journey up  Mount Moriah, Isaac asked his father, “The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham answered, “My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering.”

Why would a loving God issue such a challenge?  Was it to show proof that Abraham loved God more than his son? Was it to test Abraham’s faith? Was it to remind Abraham that God will always provide exactly what he needs? Or was it recorded as a metaphor for what was to come in the person of Jesus Christ?

This side of heaven we will never truly know why God asked such a thing of His faithful servant, but we rejoice to know that at the last moment, God stopped Abraham and provided a ram as a substitute sacrifice. This story is a perfect picture of what took place more than 2000 years later when God Himself gave His one and only Son as the Lamb of God, a substitute for you and me.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,

that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 

(John 3:16)

RIGHTEOUSNESS

Paul wrote in Romans 3:10 that “There is no one righteous, not even one.” Left to our own devices, there is absolutely no way for you and I to become righteous. If we depend on our works to make us right with God, we will never obtain righteousness. Isaiah describes our righteous acts as filthy rags. (Isaiah 64:6)

The good news is that the story doesn’t end there. Paul continued in Romans 3 to explain that our righteousness comes through faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

Romans 3:22-26 (NLT)

Paul also wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

You and I may not be able to achieve righteousness on our own, but praise be to God, Jesus came and died so that we can approach a holy God covered by His Righteousness. This week let’s praise Him and celebrate His Righteousness and never forget all Jesus did for us on that cross.

Lord God, I praise You this week for Your Righteousness. Thank You for sending Your Son to become a sacrifice so that I could be made right with You. Help me to remember that I can approach You no other way than covered by the blood of Jesus and His Righteousness.  AMEN! SO BE IT!

HELPER

Trials.

Struggles.

Adversities.

We all have them. If you live on this earth, you will have times of trouble.

What trials are you currently facing? It could be grief over the death of a loved one or loss of a marriage. Perhaps you have financial struggles or health issues that are weighing you down. Maybe you’re a caregiver who deals with constant demands on your time, energy, and emotional stability. Whatever it may be, I doubt there is a single person who looks forward to trials and difficulties.

The brother of our Lord Jesus wrote in James 1:2 that we should consider it pure joy whenever we face trials of many kinds. I don’t know about you, but having joy in the midst of our troubles is much easier said than done. James continues by telling us that the testing of our faith produces perseverance.

When we are dealing with  issues that drain us mentally, emotionally, physically, and maybe even spiritually, how can we consider it pure joy?

We can because we have a HELPER who is there for us and walks every step with us in the journey through our struggles. David wrote in Psalm 54:4, “God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my life.”

The only way you and I can persevere when our faith is tested by trails and troubles is by trusting in the Lord God as our Helper who will sustain us and carry us through any struggle we may face.

DELIVERER

Throughout the Bible, we find God delivering His people in many different ways.

He delivered Noah and his family from the flood.

He delivered the Israelites from bondage in Egypt.

He constantly delivered David from physical harm and attacks from his enemies.

He delivered Israel and Judah from captivity in Babylon and Assyria.

He delivered Peter from prison as the church prayed.

He delivered Paul from deadly peril time and time again. (2 Corinthians 1:8-11)

But His greatest act of deliverance happened when Jesus willingly went to the cross and gave His life for you and me.

“He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.”

Romans 4:25

Do you need a deliverer  today? The truth is that we don’t need Him to deliver us for just one day, we need Him to be our deliverer every single day. Join me as we praise Him this week as our Deliverer.

LOVE

Were you to choose one attribute of God that stands out above all others, what would it be?  I suspect for most of us it would be the word LOVE. Without God, love does not exist.

As children many of us memorized John 3:16 from the King James Version.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This foundation is the truth upon which the entire Gospel is based. Without God’s love for mankind, there is no Gospel.

Perhaps more than any other disciple, John knew with no doubt that he was loved by God. He often referred to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved or the beloved disciple. In the book of First John, he reminds us time and time again just how great is God’s love for us.

Do you understand just how much God loves you?

Years ago I challenged a group of ladies to write out John 3:16 and make it personal. I encourage you this week to take time and do this exercise. Write this verse as if it was written just for you, a child beloved by God.

PROVIDER

When is the last time you witnessed God’s provision in your life?

I don’t know about you, but I tend to look for miraculous acts of God and miss the everyday blessings He bestows on me. What I sometimes forget is that God is providing for me every second of every single day. Every breath I take is because God provides the oxygen in the air. My lungs inhale that oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. What an amazing organ He provided for us. Every step I take is a blessing He provided when He gave me legs. The fact that I’m able to write this message is because He provided me with hands and fingers to type. Every sunrise and sunset are gifts from God that He provides to mankind. The birds, deer, racoons, possums, ground hogs, and squirrels that often grace my backyard are reminders that He supplies all they need and does the same for you and me.

Paul wrote to the church of Philippi …

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

He is the Provider of everything we need. Even if it may not always be what we want, He promises to meet our needs.

Matthew wrote about God’s provision in Matthew 6:25-34.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.

Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

As we praise Him this week as our Provider, let’s take time to notice all He provides for us. I encourage you to make a list and post it in a noticeable place in your home as a reminder of how He meets your needs.

And don’t forget that the greatest gift He provided for us was the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord God, I praise You this week as my Provider. Thank You, Lord, for the air I breathe. Thank You for always providing for me even when I don’t even realize it. This week, help me be aware of everything You do to provide for all my needs. AMEN! SO BE IT!
