OUR GOOD SHEPHERD

I love the image of the Lord as our Good Shepherd.

In John 10, Jesus tells us how He as a Good Shepherd cares for His sheep.

• He calls His sheep by name
• He leads them
• He goes ahead of them
• He lays down His life for His sheep
• He knows His sheep
• He gives them eternal life
• No one can snatch them from His hand

Perhaps one of the most notable passages about God as our Shepherd was written by David and is found in Psalm 23.

The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

What a beautiful image of how God cares for us as His sheep.

In John 10, Jesus tells us our responsibilities as His sheep are to

  • know Him
  • recognize His voice
  • listen to Him,
  • follow Him

As you praise Him this week as your Good Shepherd, take inventory of how well you are living as His sheep. Do you seek to know Him more? Do you recognize His voice? Do you just hear Him, or do you listen to Him? Lastly, do you follow Him where He leads?

If your answer is no, this week strive to be a faithful and obedient sheep as you praise Him as your Good Shepherd.

Sunday Supplication

Good Shepherd, this week I desire to follow You wherever You may lead me. Thank you for guiding me and caring for me as a shepherd tenderly cares for his sheep. Show me where I may be swerving from the path You have placed before me. I praise You, Good Shepherd. AMEN! SO BE IT!

Monday Manna

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.”
John 10:11,14-16

Tuesday Treasure

And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
1 Peter 5:4

Wednesday Wisdom

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Hebrews 13:20-21

Thursday Truth

He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.
Micah 5:4

Friday Fact

For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.
I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.
Ezekiel 34:11-12,16
